Restoring Economic Dignity
“The dignity of the legal profession begins with the dignity of those who practise it.”
For too long, welfare has been understood as financial assistance alone. I believe welfare must be broader and more transformational. It should empower lawyers to earn more, grow professionally, and build sustainable careers. My administration will pursue reforms that strengthen the economic foundation of legal practice, protect lawyers from exploitation, and expand opportunities across every stage of the profession.
Our Priorities
Fair Remuneration and Professional Value
A profession thrives when its members are fairly rewarded. My administration will vigorously promote compliance with the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Order, strengthen the Remuneration Committee, and work with NBA Branches to improve awareness and enforcement of minimum professional fee standards. We will restore the value of legal services by discouraging underpricing and promoting ethical remuneration practices.
Better Opportunities for Young Lawyers
Young lawyers should begin their careers with dignity, not uncertainty. We will advocate for a structured pupilage system accompanied by a mandatory living wage, develop remuneration benchmarks for early-career lawyers, and encourage employers to provide fair salaries, humane working conditions, and meaningful career progression.
Workplace Dignity and Professional Protection
Every lawyer deserves to work in an environment of respect. My administration will establish safe institutional channels for reporting workplace harassment, bullying, discrimination, victimisation, and exploitation. We will promote a culture of professionalism, accountability, and mutual respect across the legal profession.
Career Growth and Economic Empowerment
Professional success should never be limited by a lack of opportunity. Through the NBA Career Hub and partnerships across the legal ecosystem, we will expand access to employment opportunities, mentorship, and professional development. We will also explore access-to-finance initiatives that enable lawyers to strengthen and grow their practices.
Protecting Lawyers in the Course of Duty
The administration of justice depends on lawyers who can perform their duties without fear or intimidation. We will pursue an NBA–Police Lawyer Access Protocol to safeguard the rights of counsel at law enforcement facilities, establish rapid escalation channels where lawyers are obstructed in the discharge of their duties, and reinforce institutional mechanisms that protect professional independence.
Preserving Dignity in the Courtroom
The courtroom must remain a place of law, courtesy, and mutual respect. My administration will strengthen the Bar–Bench relationship through a Bench–Bar Dignity Charter, improve complaint and resolution mechanisms, and advocate against judicial intimidation, abuse of contempt powers, and conduct that undermines the dignity of the legal profession.
Supporting Lawyers in Public Service
Lawyers serving in government play a critical role in nation-building and deserve recognition that reflects their professional contribution. My administration will continue to advocate for improved remuneration, enhanced welfare, and equitable career progression for Law Officers and other lawyers in the public service.
